On the first day of our overnight stop in Hiroshima, Japan on Sun Princess in April 2013, we took the Princess ship tour called “Miyajima, Peace Memorial Park & Atomic Bomb Dome”. This day was definitely one of the highlights of our Japan cruise.

Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine’s red torii gate that rises from the waters of the Seto Inland Sea.

The streets around the Itsukushima Shrine are filled with shops and food vendors, selling unique & delicious snacks. On our way back to Hiroshima, we stopped for a wonderful Japanese lunch at the Aki Grand Hotel.

 Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built near Ground Zero of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II. It is a sobering reminder of the innocent people who lost their lives but also of the resilience of the city and her survivors.
